If you can creatively use the principles...I agree. If you can creatively use the principles of design to emphasize who that character is, there's a good chance your character will have the elusive appeal you're after. With that said, creativity does not equal taste. Finding that right combination of shapes and principles does require a bit of intuition, or "magic," like you said. I especially think you have a point as to what audience you're catering to...I found a lot of the designs in character design that I loved were different than what the other people liked, and the illustration majors always liked different things than the animation majors. The designs for picture books vs. graphic novels vs. cartoons vs. animated features all differ drastically.
