Making a game, making toys

This figure is 3.5 inches tall, I think.  I prefer them without color, actually!
Here's a great post by Chad Lidell who is one of the lead designers and minds behind Disney Infinity.
He addressed a lot of things that have annoyed me in the news I've read about the game.  Our goal has been quality and experience all the way so that when people reduce what we're doing to "a Skylanders clone" it's painful.

He took the above photo and I'm glad he did: without the paint you see how much care we put into the sculptures of the toys.  I was just one of many artists that worked on Jack Sparrow, and I can promise that there isn't a millimeter of these toys that wasn't deliberated over and redesigned a hundred times until it was perfect.  Hopefully I can show some of the concept progress and other sculpts soon.

  1. Love the design on Jack Sparrow! So far its my favorite of the new designs, but there's tiff competition. Hope you can post more sculpts in the future!

  3. Hopefully the knee comparisons will stop, once more media comes out showing the real depth of the game.

  4. We went to a football game once. BYU. Maybe twice. Anyway, the time I'm thinking of, there was this skinny guy with a really kind of shrill (and yet guttural - go figure) voice, and he was yelling a lot. "YOU . . . DETMER!!!!!" He'd yell that like a curse - the poor quarterback's name - any time he didn't like what was going on. And I thought -

So, I guess I'm saying, whatever you do - whoever you are - and maybe the better you are, the more it happens - everybody's a critic. They don't know what they're talking about. They haven't got a clue about the cost of what they're looking at. But they're experts 'cause they didn't make it or write it or shape it themselves. Jerks. Sometimes (read:often) I think you should have to apply for a license before you can open your mouth or write for publication - including the making of political comments on Facebook = and definitely before you are allowed to have children.

And ummm - I think you've got spam going here.

  5. Ummm- how did they get past the Captcha? If the thing's not working, for heaven's sake, dump it. Obnoxious things, Captcha.

  6. K: I think it's actual people hired by someone to go around and post on people's blogs. There's no way to filter for that, unfortunately.

I've sometimes felt like you say, but there'd be a lot of things I couldn't post here if you had to have a "I Know What I'm Talking About" license, so I guess I'm glad such a thing doesn't exist.

  8. I'm one of the people who really has thought that this was just disney trying to cash in on the success of Skylanders. At first glance these two games seem to be very similar in what they're trying to do; Collectable figurines that a player can take into the game and play with. Obviously they're not going to turn out the same but I hope you can understand where the comparisons are coming from.

  9. DJ: I do understand that someone would make the comparison if they didn't learn anything more about it than that there are toys that let you play in the game. The reason for this post (and the link I provided) is because I find it sad that people dismiss it out of hand instead of learning more and discovering that they are quite different.
