Forgotten Princesses

Done for the Avalanche blog "Disney Princesses"  Topic.  No, this isn't an insider leak of future projects, and yes, I do realize that Hester Prynne isn't technically a princess.

  1. I love this. The Jocasta one made me curl up in a fetal position. And The Scarlet Letter SHOULD be made into a musical, dang it.

Other possible princesses: Tess of the D'Ubervilles, Madame Bovary, Leena from Singin in the Rain.

  3. Heather = ROTF.

Sam - Ophelia is just a touch Anime, yes? Hester. Hmmm. If I'd only had that picture of her in my mind when I was forced to read that thing in HS. TWICE. Once in NY, once in TX. Jocasta. Yes. I have a real feel for that full length musical -

PS> My kid, Chaz, would seriously love to be sitting where you are; character designer, she is. You all live in an odd world.

  4. Thanks for the comments!

Heather: Great ideas! I was thinking of doing some more, maybe if I do I'll use some of your ideas. But Leena, would she need voice-over for her singing?

K: You bring out a good comparison by saying Ophelia is a bit anime, because you could also say most the disney princesses have anime-esque elements. Could it be that Disney was a heavy influence for the anime look, or is it the other way around?

"Could it be that Disney was a heavy influence for the anime look, or is it the other way around?"

The influence goes in both directions. Disney was an influence on Tezuka Osamu, who is considered the father of manga, godfather of anime. (Seriously, you can trace direct inheritances from him to almost everybody working in Japan today.) Osamu's work owes as much to Max and Dave Fleischer as disney. (E.g. Betty Boop)

On the other hand, the similarities between Kimba the White Lion and The Lion King have not gone unnoticed. Before the internets, it was common for plenty of "inspiration" to be borrowed in both directions overseas.

The problem is, Oedipus was raised by Polybus and Merope, so that scene would occur in an ESPECIALLY alternate story.
