K: You bring out a good comparison by saying Ophelia is a bit anime, because you could also say most the disney princesses have anime-esque elements. Could it be that Disney was a heavy influence for the anime look, or is it the other way around?

ReplyDeleteThe influence goes in both directions. Disney was an influence on Tezuka Osamu, who is considered the father of manga, godfather of anime. (Seriously, you can trace direct inheritances from him to almost everybody working in Japan today.) Osamu's work owes as much to Max and Dave Fleischer as disney. (E.g. Betty Boop)
On the other hand, the similarities between Kimba the White Lion and The Lion King have not gone unnoticed. Before the internets, it was common for plenty of "inspiration" to be borrowed in both directions overseas.
