I use an old Intuos 2 at home and the pen is falling apart. I hate it. I'm counting the number of times that the button falls off and the sleeve falls down before I get fed up enough to spend money on either A) a new pen or B) a new tablet altogether. I hate to spend $70 on a stupid pen, but I'm having an equally hard time justifying the much larger expense of the tablet.
I do like the Intuos 4 though. I spent about 10 minutes scratching out this color sketch on a coworker's new intuos 4, and then spent another 20 minutes polishing it up on my rickety tablet at home. The quality difference between the two was pretty big, but I have to weigh that factor against how cheap I am. So at least for now, cheapness wins.

once every month or so I have this same debate in my head about a cintiq. Then I always just end up feeling fine with my intuos 3.
I'll probably start doing the same thing with the iPad, a life size boba fett, and puppies.
Hey, didn't Hemingway write a book titled this?
Boo! Your time is worth so little?!
New tablet = more art for me to look at.
sounds like its interrupting your flow, zen, zone. might be time to bite the bullet. nice work!
<_<
>_>
Tax deductible ;)
well it turned out pretty awesome even with the struggles. You always achieve so much form in your pieces, something I really enjoy and personally need to work on
I fought with myself for over a year before finally buying a new tablet. I decided it was at least worth ending the internal debate and overcoming the sin of coveting :)
i'm the same, I have to re-attach my button everyday and I gave up on the rubber thing and tore it off long ago. you tried CS5's new paint tools?
pretty fun stuff
Well, I still do with a small Wacom Bamboo Fun, and eventually it does the job just fine. Of course we'll have to change it for a new one, but it will be when it starts to rot or disintegrate.
i guess i'll save my breath about the joy of using a cintiq....
wow. Exactly my same debate. Intuos 2 that I've had or 7 years? or brand New Cintiq. Cintiq wins as soon as I have some extra coin.
Was this done in Painter?
.Perhaps , you could sell your old wacom by internet, so you new wacom intuos 4 won´t be expensive.
.Think about it Sam , The whole world would like to get "The Sam´s old wacom" ;)
by the way , i like taht guy , who´s he?
Fun exaggeration!
Haha, looks awesome dude, and don't be cheap with tablets - it's probably the one thing I never regreted spending money on :D
Who needs a new tablet when you can splat great work like this out of the old one? Great work :-)
I still have my Wacom Intuos I, from 9 years ago...and I still love it and works like a charm.
I'd love to buy a Cintiq 21, but no money for that...If I sell any picture in my next exhibition this summer, I may think about this again...
Great work! A perfect mix of abstract and realistic...
greets,
Mona
Mark Robison: Luckily, there's no joy for me there. While I like the Cintiq in concept, the reality of it for me is a sore back and messed up colors. Maybe someday when they figure out how to make it a better monitor and more comfortable to use (a faster response rate to my actions would be nice too).
Russ Cox: Yep.
Jose: Just some guy, I didn't have anyone in mind.
Thanks everyone else for the comments!
first off, awesome portrait. second, i'm in the same boat. i almost just wish the wacom i have at home would just break altogether so i'd be forced to get a new one. i'm using an intuos one at home and a three at work. huge difference of quality.
i like
Really really cool! I love the expression he has
Sam, maybe you should try a cintiq...
This might or might not work for you.
Keep all your receipts and note any other expenses that didn't involve receipts for 1 month. Then take a long hard look and see how much money could be considered "wasted".
It might surprise you how soon you could afford a new tablet by temporarily tweaking your spending just a little.
I wasted $178 in the last week alone. If I'd saved it and had another $60 I could have gotten the small intuos 4 :(
My kid gave me her old tablet last week. I"m still trying to figure out how to plug it in. My heart aches for you.
I concur
Cool painting! Character reminds me of Pete Townshend (The Who).
I'm with Mike Bear - awesome portrait!
