Trying out ArtRage

My review is this: if they exposed the controls to the brushes a tiny bit more, this would be a seriously cool painting program. As it is, it's barely more than a neat, but frustrating, toy.

  1. That review sums it up perfectly.
When I tried ArtRage, it (almost) didn't feel like I was painting on a computer. I really wanted to use it but...

ArtRage could quickly replace my use of Corel Painter and Photoshop for some projects IF it weren't for those few missing brush controls. I'm not asking for any new brushes and I don't want the overwhelming labyrinth of brush controls like Corel Painter. Just a few basic brush shaping controls are needed and I'm set!
Until then, I mostly just use ArtRage with the iPad as a mobile sketchbook.

    1. I need to try out the ipad version, I've heard a lot of good about it.

  2. I feel the exact same way, Art Rage had some very cool possibilities, but the controls were difficult to figure out and use. I was really hoping I'd be able to get into it and use the neat painting effects, but it's not really worth the trouble. :P

    1. I sort of want to petition the designers to see if we can get those controls exposed. :)

You're right, Sam. I like their paper textures and some of their tools, but I wish their interface was simpler. I still wish Adobe would just make Adobe Artshop or something like that.

I wish I knew how to build software because I would definitely make something like that myself. I would build a program with the canvas from Alchemy, the brushes from painter, the editing from photoshop, the color picker from sketchbook pro and make the UI more intuitive.

    1. I've never been so sad to be right, either. It's a beautiful program. I totally agree with you about mashing the programs strong points together, but I wouldn't take Painter's brush engine. I actually think Photoshop's brush controls are better and the brush engine from Artrage is better, so I'd probably just want to mix those two. The only thing I'd take from Painter is maybe the watercolor brushes and the ability to invert the pressure controls (the thing that frustrates me most about Photoshop's mixer brushes).

  4. I really enjoy ArtRage as a quick way to get an idea down, but I have to agree... the lack of finite control on the brushes can be incredibly frustrating. Especially when you know that they're there, right under the hood.

  5. Sam, please try Easy Paint Tool SAI. Color and blending are pure pleasure.
